Puerto Vallarta’s Best Beaches

For decades, beautiful beaches have been one of Puerto Vallarta’s primary attractions.   Approximately twenty-six miles of beaches extend around the Bay of Banderas, from action-packed party spots to private coves available solely by boat.

In Town — The easiest to reach is probably Playa Los Muertos, south of the Rio Cuale. The waves can tend to be challenging, although the wide beach has a various array of beachfront restaurants offering food, drinks, as well as beach-chair service. The best known happen to be the neighboring El Dorado and La Palapa, at the end of Pulpito Street.  Vendors stroll Los Muertos, and volleyball, parasailing, as well as jet-skiing are prevalent activities. The Hotel Zone may also be well-known for the spacious, white sand beaches, obtainable mainly through the hotel lobbies.

South of Town — Playa Conchas Chinas, one of the best beaches in Vallarta, is refered to as “The Beverly Hills of Puerto Vallarta” for the multi-million dollar private luxury villas and condominiums. Only one mile away from the city, Conchas Chinas offers a gorgeous coastline with areas of white sand divided by rugged outcroppings in addition to the most popular villas in Puerto Vallarta.

Playa Mismaloya lies in a picturesque cove approximately six miles south of the city down Hwy 200. The water is clear and exquisite, great for snorkeling off of the shore. Access to the public beach is to the left of the Hotel Barcelo La Jolla de Mismaloya.  The beach at Boca de Tomatlan, just down the road, consists of several palapa restaurants where one can unwind for the day — you buy drinks, snacks, or a meal, and they allow you to utilize the beach chairs and palapa shade. Las Animas, Quimixto, and Yelapa beaches will offer you an authentic feeling of solitude; and are reachable solely by boat. They are larger than Mismaloya, will offer you captivating hikes and horseback riding to waterfalls, and they also feature many beachfront restaurants. Overnight accommodations are also available at Yelapa.

North of Town — Most of the northern shoreline from Bucerias to Punta Mita is a chain of sandy beaches alternating with rugged inlets. For quite a long time,  the coastline to the north, with lengthy, clean breaks, happen to have been a favorite among surfers. The wide, sandy beaches at Playa Anclote, Playa Piedras Blancas, and Playa Destiladeras, which all have palapa restaurants, have made them popular among residents and tourists looking to find a quick getaway.

The beautiful white-sand beach at Punta Mita, home to the Four Seasons, is closed to the public, with the exception of homeowners and guests of this private resort area. It is possible to rent a panga (small motor-driven boat) on Playa Anclote and have the captain take you to the Marietas Islands just off the coast. These uninhabited islands are a fantastic location for birdwatching, scuba diving, snorkeling, or beach combing. Blue-footed booby birds (discovered only here, and in the Galapagos) may be seen along the islands’ rugged shore, as well as giant mantas, marine turtles, and bright tropical fish swimming amidst the coral cliffs. The islands are honeycombed with caves and secluded beaches–including the beautiful Playa de Amor which only arises during low tide. Humpback whales congregate throughout these islands during the winter season. You may also pay a visit to these islands on board one of the many daily charters which embark from the cruise-ship terminal. Most notably, Puerto Vallarta beaches will be able to satisfy a variety of expectations from one extreme to another.
